Why Adults Learn Better Through Play🧩

When did we decide and agree that games are only for children? And why? Especially for us adults, games can be an ideal escape from everyday life, routine, and stress. Even more so when they are combined with learning a new language—in our case, Greek! Learning as an adult should never feel like a chore. When lessons include games, the experience becomes less intimidating, more motivating, and far more effective. So let’s take a look at some of the benefits of learning through games as an adult.

As mentioned above, games help reduce not only the stress we all carry in general, but also the anxiety and self-doubt connected to learning a foreign language. When we learn through play, the pressure, self-criticism, and expectations ease up and make room for enjoyment and relaxation. This allows our mind to become more open to new information—and of course, the more fun we’re having, the more focused we are! And from a cognitive perspective, games activate multiple cognitive processes at once—visual recognition, decision-making, repetition, and problem-solving. This combination helps information stick. Studies show that we remember far better when learning is interactive rather than passive.

If there’s one thing we should learn from children in this process, it’s their complete lack of fear when it comes to making mistakes. This is often the biggest obstacle adults face when learning a new language. Games, however, create a pleasant and safe environment where even if we make a mistake, we’re far more likely to laugh than to get frustrated or disappointed with ourselves.

On the other hand, if we’re talking about an online group with learners from completely different environments and time zones, games can make excellent ice breakers! They bring them closer, help them get to know each other more quickly, and begin building their own little learning community.

In the end, learning as adults doesn’t need to feel heavy, serious, or intimidating. When we bring games into the process, we bring back curiosity, creativity, and a sense of playfulness that makes learning a language not just easier, but genuinely enjoyable. So -and this is very important- don’t be embarassed to play or show that you’re having fun while playing!!!
