Learning Greek as an adult!
Many people believe that learning a new language -especially Greek- is impossible to do as an adult. They say that managing day to day life is hard as it is with work, family and other responsibilities someone could have. To be honest… we don’t think that’s true! Learning any new language as an adult has its difficulties, yes, but it also comes with a lot of perks and much easier than you think. Let us explain why:
📚 Learning is a lifelong journey
There’s no age limit that says, “From now on, you can’t learn a new language.” On the contrary—when you’re an adult, you actually learn a language more consciously. It’s your own choice, made for your personal reasons and your own growth, not because you were “forced to” back in school. That makes the whole process easier, more enjoyable, and of course, more effective! Which brings us to our next point: motivation.
🎯 Why did you choose Greek in the first place?
Think about what made you decide—or even just want—to learn Greek. Maybe you have Greek roots. Maybe your partner or best friend is from Greece. Or maybe you simply love exploring the world and learning new things. These are your personal goals, and they’re what drive you to learn Greek!
It might be your way of getting closer to your family or your loved one, of understanding better where certain customs or habits you grew up with come from. Or maybe it’s your way of learning more about the world we live in and broadening your horizons. And wouldn’t it be a shame to miss out on all of that, just because you’re an adult?
🎉 YES! It’s easier than you think!
Here’s another thought: learning can easily be combined with your personal interests—from songs and movies to history and your yiayia’s recipes! That connection to the things you already love makes the process even easier and more fun. And let’s not forget how many Greek words and expressions you already know and use in English! It really doesn’t take as much effort as you might think.
🎧 Learn anytime, anywhere!
You can join a group class and interact with other adults who share the same interests and love for Greek. It can only take just 10minutes a day, to review and practice what you learned in a lesson. Plus, you can still practice outside of class with the Let’s Talk Greek podcast, where you can practice your listening skills and learn about all kinds of topics—from grammar tips to everyday life in Greece, like the local farmers’ market!
And to close with a phrase from Solon, one of the Seven Sages of Ancient Greece: «Γηράσκω δ’ αεί πολλά διδασκόμενος.». Meaning that learning has no age and that a wise person keeps learning until the end of their life.
