5 -not so famous- beaches close to Athens

If you’ve read some of our other posts, you’ve probably noticed that we love recommending places beyond the usual and most popular spots! You’ll see those anyway when you visit Athens, Thessaloniki, or any other part of Greece. We’re here to give you more alternatives — and maybe a few more “insider” picks too.

1. Legrena – A Hidden Paradise

About an hour’s drive from Athens, near Cape Sounio, Legrena is a spacious, peaceful beach with golden sand and clear blue waters. A perfect place to practice Greek vocabulary while listening to the waves.

2. Charakas – For Nature Lovers

Close to Sounio as well, Charakas is an organized beach that still feels calm and uncrowded. With rocky surroundings and shallow waters, it’s ideal for a morning Greek lesson followed by a relaxing swim with a view of the Temple of Poseidon.

3. Agia Marina Koropiou – A Quiet Eastern Escape

Located near Koropi, this small beach is a favorite among locals. It’s great for a more authentic, down-to-earth experience — and an opportunity to hear real Greek being spoken around you.

4. Dikastika – Lavrio’s Hidden Gem

Tucked just outside of Lavrio, Dikastika is the kind of beach that doesn’t appear on signs or tourist maps. It’s peaceful, crystal clear, and perfect for an afternoon of reading your Greek textbook undisturbed.

5. Varkiza – The Alternative to Glyfada

Though it's not far from some of Athens’ most famous coastal areas, Varkiza offers a number of small coves and rocky spots that are far less crowded. Great for sunset studying — or simply soaking in the Greek summer atmosphere.
